Dear members of the ILCB community, |
| |
|
At a time when the value of science is increasingly questioned—even undermined—in some parts of the world, it is more vital than ever to reaffirm our commitment to open, rigorous, and collaborative research. This month’s featured quote, from a colleague at a neighbouring Convergences Institute, captures this spirit. The walls between disciplines should not be insurmountable fortresses, but rather low fences—"murets"—that invite exchange, perspective, and innovation.
It is regrettable, then, that we could not share this vision with the French Ministry of Research, which never responded to the initiative led by the ten Convergences Institutes to present the outcomes of eight years of interdisciplinary work and explore ways to sustain the funding of these lighthouse research centres.
Still, the strong response to our recent calls underscores the continued appeal of our approach. We received nearly 150 international applications for the upcoming ILCB Summer School, and 10 applications for our advertised postdoc position, most of them from outside France. These numbers are more than just metrics, they reflect the growing international visibility and attractiveness of the ILCB. |

Production of Phonotactically Legal and Illegal Pseudowords |
|

MEG-GLOUPS a curated dataset of raw magneto-encephalography (MEG) recordings from French speakers completing a pseudo-word learning task, along with resting-state recordings before and after the task. The seventeen participants pronounced visually and auditorily presented pseudo-words that followed or violated French phonotactic rules. The dataset adheres to the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) standard and includes basic preprocessing and quality checks. Comprehensive documentation covers the study’s rationale, design, data collection, and validation.

Vocalizations by Common Marmosets |
|

MarmAudio is a database of common marmoset vocalisations, recorded from an animal facility that houses around 20 marmosets in three cages. The dataset comprises more than 800,000 files of a few seconds each, amounting to 253 hours of data. These recordings capture the marmosets' social vocalisations, encompassing their entire known vocal repertoire. The vocalisations were projected into a 16-dimensional auto-encoder latent space then visualised in 2D using UMAP — Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection. Vocalisation types (e.g., trill, twitter) are indicated by colour.

« Donc, bien sûr, les divisions entre disciplines sont nécessaires, elles structurent le savoir mais il faudrait tout faire, je pense, pour que les murs entre disciplines ne soient plus des murailles mais des murets, si j'ose dire. C'est une expression que Raymond Boudon avait utilisé à la fin de sa vie quand il essayait de dresser un bilan de son expérience universitaire. »

Conference on Embodied and Situated Language Processes (ESLP)
The Embodied and Situated Language Processing (ESLP) Conference provides an interdisciplinary forum for discussing the interaction of language and sensory and motor processing, based on behavioural, neurophysiological, or computational approaches, with the goal fostering theories of semantic grounding or embodiment and pragmatic situated communication and language use. This year's conference will expand its scope to include perspectives on non-human cognition.
The 2025 edition of ESLP will take place from Sept 23rd to 26th at Le Cube in Aix-en-Provence, featuring keynote presentations by
