Dear members of the ILCB community, |
| |
|
I hope you had a great summer break!
The new academic year started for us with the 8th edition of the ILCB Summer School, which brought together 142 participants from all over the world and 31 speakers. Excellent courses, lively discussions, and an amazing Cumbia group made this édition yet again a very special event. Many thanks to all of you who made it possible!
This month you are reading the 50th issue of our Newsletter, edited by Xavier Alario, whom I would like to warmly thank on this occasion. As always, you’ll find links to our events, news, and articles. Congratulations as well to Margherita Giamundo, one of our postdocs, who published a paper in Science Advances over the summer — no rest for the wicked!
Please mark your calendars for our ILCB Welcome Back Party on October 10, 2025, starting at 9:30 am! Join us as we celebrate the new season, warmly welcome Philippe Albouy, current holder of the ILCB–Iméra Chair, and greet our new members — including postdocs and PhD students. I look forward to seeing you there! |

On the Development of Breathing and Vocalization in a Prelinguistic Child: A Case Study |
|
Breathing plays a fundamental role in speech production of human adults. The capacity of controlling breathing develops over the first year of life, a critical period for babbling. We tracked one infant from about 7 to 9 months of age, measuring breathing and vocalization during spontaneous interactions with the mother. Analysis of the acoustic (waveform, spectrogram) and respiratory (thoracic volume changes) signals showed a maturation of breathing control, with exhalation phases getting longer and more adult-like over time. The relation between vocalization and respiration also shifted, with phonation occurring more often during inhalation at about 7 months and during exhalation at about 9 months. Thus, breathing is a rhythmic frame that should be integrated into models of speech acquisition. Fuchs, Susanne, Marianne Jover, Aude Noiray, and Caterina Petrone. 2025. Conference on Embodied and Situated Language Processes (ESLP)
The Embodied and Situated Language Processing (ESLP) Conference provides an interdisciplinary forum for discussing the interaction of language and sensory and motor processing, based on behavioural, neurophysiological, or computational approaches, with the goal fostering theories of semantic grounding or embodiment and pragmatic situated communication and language use. This year's conference will expand its scope to include perspectives on non-human cognition.
The 2025 edition of ESLP will take place from Sept 23rd to 26th at Le Cube in Aix-en-Provence, featuring keynote presentations by

On October 2, 2025,
Laboratoire Parole et Langage (LPL) andLaboratoire Dynamique du Langage (UMR 5596, Lyon) will host a day of scientific exchanges. The day will focus on four main themes that are central to the scientific interests of both laboratories: 1) language and cognition, 2) brain and speech rhythms, 3) diversity, multilingualism, and language contact, 4) language and emotion. Each theme will be addressed by presentations from a member of the LPL and a member of the DDL, followed by a discussion and exchange.(Les présentations seront en anglais ou en français.)
For further details, you can contact Chotiga Pattamadilok (LPL). |

Neurosciences de demain à + 2°
October 15th to 17th, 2025
