Dear members of the ILCB community, |
| |
|
Congratulations to professors Usha Goswami (University of Cambridge) and Martin Pickering (University of Edinburgh) for receiving the Doctor Honoris Causa distinction on April 7. Usha is a member of the ILCB International Advisory Board, and Martin a long-standing honorary member, who has been especially active in ILCB’s European Training Network Conversational Brains (COBRA), led by Noël Nguyen and Kristof Strijkers. |

After a short break, the ILCB is delighted to host the 8th Annual Meeting of the Society for the Cognitive Science of Culture, featuring keynote lectures by Usha Goswami, Daniele Schön, Helmut Leder, and Patrick Lemaire. We look forward to welcoming colleagues and students from around the world for what promises to be a stimulating and inspiring event. You can discover the updated program here.
We are also pleased to welcome Katarzyna Jednoróg (Laboratory of Language Neurobiology, Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw), who will be visiting the ILCB. She will give an exceptional talk next Monday at St. Charles.
Wishing you all a wonderful spring break, and looking forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events. |

Multi-Interaction: A New Open-Access Approach for Studying Multimodal Communication and Interactions across Species |
|

Comparative studies of multimodal interactions currently suffer from a lack of consistent and standardized methods. To address this limitation, we introduce a unified framework supported by a new method for annotating, processing, and analyzing interaction data, while preserving key features such as interaction units, emitters, overlaps, and silences.
In this transcription of a hypothetical dyadic communicative interaction, the units emitted by individuals 1 and 2 appear along a temporal axis (a). The interaction can be divided into ‘states’ (orange boxes) to reflect any change when it occurs (i.e. a unit disappears or a new one appears; b). The states are then grouped into a single sequence after applying our transcription method, whereby each state corresponds to a cell with each units attached to their emitter (c).
Ultimately, this approach enables robust comparisons of interactions across different species.

8th annual meeting - The Society for the Cognitive Science of Culture |
|
📅 22nd to 24th of April, 2026 — 📍Aix-en-Provence (Le Cube)
|
|
|
| |
Aims and scope
The contributions will highlight methodological advances, particularly in spectroscopy, quantitative mapping, and in vivo histology. They will illustrate how these methods 1) enable an understanding of individual differences and brain plasticity, for example in development and aging or language learning, and 2) show promise for the identification of biomarkers and therapeutic targets, for example in the case of neurodegenerative diseases.
