4 more years!

Bringing together experts in linguistics, neuroscience, psychology, medicine and computer science to understand and to model how language functions.

Dear members of the ILCB community,

Let me start with the excellent news that the ILCB project (ANR-16-CONV-0002) has been extended for 2 years, which means that we have another 4 full years as an Institute of Convergence financed by France 2030 and AMIDEX. Plenty of time to finish our projects and even start some new ones!

Sadly, our two project managers — Marien Guyon and Sabrina Rodrigues — will be leaving us after the summer; but we have opened a position to replace them. The tasks are essentially steering support, communication, education, and event management. If you know (of) potential candidates, please tell them to contact Nadera Bureau for additional information

Many of us just came back from the ILCB-ERC workshop “Hand, Voice & Brain: Ontogeny and Evolution” organized by Adrien Meguerditchian on the beautiful island of Frioul. During 4 days, about 60 participants including 26 local, national and international speakers from various disciplines (Developmental Psychology, Animal Cognition, Anthropology, Anatomy, Language Science, Neuroscience) enjoyed stimulating talks and fruitful discussion and had the chance to hear key note lectures by Louis-Jean BOË (GIPSA-lab, Grenoble), Simone PIKA (Universität Osnabrück, Germany), Didier GRANDJEAN (Université de Genève), Céline AMIEZ (Inserm, Lyon) and Roberto TORO (Pasteur Paris).

I also wanted to tell you Jonathan Grainger — an important member of the ILCB — is retiring at the end of the month. Jonathan Grainger founded the Laboratoire de Psychologie Cognitive (LPC) at Aix-Marseille University (then known as Université de Provence). He has published more than 300 articles on diverse topics, such as orthographic processing in visual word recognition, interactive activation, bilingualism, etc. He was awarded with the Silver Medal of the CNRS in 2011. The LPC is organising a little celebration on Friday 23rd, at 11:00. Those of you who worked with him are invited to join us in the Salle des Voutes on the Saint-Charles campus.

Best wishes,

Johannes

Quote of the month

"You that read wrong again!"

After working most his life on single word recognition, Jonathan Grainger moved onto sentence processing and discovered with his collaborators the transposed-word effect in grammaticality judgments.

Do stereotypes on the speaker affect comprehension of irony? Evidence from neural oscillations

Social knowledge about a speaker can include as stereotypes on their occupation (e.g., more or less prone to sarcastic remarks). This knowledge constrains ironic interpretation early-on, as revealed by the modulations of synchronization we observed in the upper gamma band in the 150–250 ms time window. There was greater synchronization in the ironic context compared to the literal context condition when the speaker has a “sarcastic occupation”. This result supports the constraint satisfaction model according to which multiple sources of information are used as soon as they are available, in the early stage of language processing.
