ILCB's monthly newsletter N°15 - June 15th, 2022
Institute of Language, Communication and the Brain Bringing together experts in linguistics, neuroscience, psychology, medicine and computer science to understand and to model how language functions.

Dear members of the ILCB community,

Many of us just returned from our annual scientific retreat in St. Cyr-sur-Mer. This has been an amazingly stimulating event in an outstanding location, “une bouffée d’air intellectuelle, amicale et musicale” or, as DeepL would say it, an intellectual, friendly and musical breath of fresh air.

In the end, we had a very dense scientific program despite our efforts to keep it light, but it was well worth the effort. The beat was on during the sessions until late at night. We all felt that the ILCB has made significant progress in our four key domains (see figure below). Many of us—including two members of the international advisory board—have been impressed by the scope and the quality of the collaborations between different members of the ILCB, and by the constant support provided by the CREx.

Time after time, we see that what has been created is special and we’ll do everything to preserve it.

The retreat is over but science goes on at the ILCB, with a number of excellent workshops and conferences described below. I look forward to seeing you on one of these occasions.

Best wishes,
Johannes

Quote of the month

L'art du jardinier

"Des institutions dont la direction pratique l'art du jardinier, fait d'attention aux conditions d'éclosion du génie propre de chaque plante, et non l'art du berger maniant le bâton pour conduire son troupeau."

"Institutions whose management practices the art of the gardener who pays attention to the conditions for the blossoming of the genius of each plant and not the art of the shepherd who uses a stick to lead his flock."

Alain Supiot, citant André Haudricourt, dans sa leçon finale au Collège de France intitulée "Le travail n’est pas une marchandise. Contenu & sens du travail au XXIe siècle" incluant une discussion détaillée du travail universitaire.

Summer Training Internships
Stage de Formation Estival
ILCB invites applications for Master students’ summer training internships—in French, “stage de formation estival”. The primary goal is to provide students with a training opportunity in our laboratories and platforms during the summer recess, broadly understood. The internship must have explicit training goals. It will have to be framed within a “convention de stage” and have a duration between 1 and 3 months. The student will be compensated (“gratification”) with 500 to 600 EUR per month according to AMIDEX regulations. The next application deadlines are May 31st and June 27th.
