Welcoming our new project manager
ILCB's monthly newsletter N°31 - Dec. 15th, 2023
Institute of Language, Communication and the Brain Institute of Language, Communication and the Brain
Bringing together experts in linguistics, neuroscience, psychology, medicine and computer science to understand and to model how language functions.

Dear members of the ILCB community,

Only one more week to go before the Xmas break!

But before that, here are the latest ILCB news...

Please welcome our new project manager Lilia Mena, whose portrait is presented below. Lilia will get in touch with you shortly because we need to update our ILCB member directory. Some people left, others have joined the ILCB, and some of you or your students have changed positions or affiliations. When you have a second, please check on the ILCB directory whether the information stated is still valid for you and the docs and postdocs you supervise. If not, just send an email to Nadéra or Lilia.

A reminder concerning our monthly seed funding applications (“demandes au fil de l’eau”). Only members of the ILCB are eligible to submit requests. If you are not a member, you need to associate an ILCB member with your request. If you are a PhD or Master student, please have your funding application checked and approved by your supervisor(s). We have added a box on the forms for that purpose. Also make sure to use the latest forms, which also contain all the submission deadlines.

Next year will start with many exciting events, such as the NeuroMarseille NeuroStories featuring an ILCB member, and great Lunch Talks. Please check out all events below.

Wishing you all a happy and relaxing Xmas break,

Johannes

Quote of the month

"[Sloppy Parameter Analysis (SPA)] will allow us to examine which parameters are 'stiff' (i.e., have a strong effect on model performance) and which parameters are 'sloppy' (i.e., have little effect on model performance). The combination of model optimization with SPA provides insights into how complex computational models really are and which parameters are important for the predictions they generate."

Event-Related Variability is Modulated by Task and Development

"In much of the Event Related Potential (ERP) literature, trial-by-trial signal variability is considered unwanted noise to be discarded through the averaging process. An alternative hypothesis is that this variability carries interpretable information. We quantified variability in sensor space by considering three terms: 'flyby distance' to a reference ERP template, distance between trials, and within-trial speed (the rate of topographic change). Our research reveals that both across- and within-trial variability has a complex organization that gradually evolves through early infancy."

 Science podcast featuring Christine Meunier
Science podcast featuring Christine Meunier
Mireille Besson and Vicent Hok (LNC) present the 4th ILCB / Fed3C science podcast, where they interview senior members of the ILCB or the Fédération 3C. The conversations are organized around three topics: (i) the speaker's scientific career, (ii) the evolution of theories in their field(s), and (iii) the evolution of the job itself. This episode features Christine Meunier, director of LPL.

ILCB at Neurostories
Neurostories, 5th edition

The NeuroStories event is organized by the NeuroMarseille Institute. NeuroStories are 15 minutes "stand-up" presentations on the cerveau. (The event is in French.) Five speakers will provide complementary views on how the brain adapts to its environment.

Elin Runnqvist (LPL) will present her research "UNE COPIE DU MONDE DANS NOTRE TÊTE !"

January 25th at 7 PM -- Amphithéatre Noailles, 63 La Canebière, 13001 Marseille
